poem for my father…8/8/44 – 8/6/03

this is the anniversary of my fathers death. My father was arrested and incarcerated from the time I was 15 til he died in ’03.

My Father Left us for the Moon

At birth I knew she lived in darkness

I would grow to be on her cycle and have her wisdom

that my father was afraid

of conversations and ones like this

My mother and I watched him step on her and stab her with his flag

He wanted to be first

So many white men did

I don’t know how we got so used to it

guess we were afraid

My father was afraid

of conversations and ones like this

about The Moon

he said at best she’s half enlightened

The Moon

she just revolves around him

The Moon

My mother and I watched him leave for outerspace

never to return

though he was dying too
